Dear Monkey,
The past month flew by and you are now 19 months old. You are such a chatterbox now, trying to say all the words Daddy and I say. Your new vocabulary regularly consists of the following words: wawa (water), sausage, potty, apes (grapes), epane (airplane), awnower (lawn mower), fretch (fresh), tank tu (thank you), peaz/meaz (please), I sorry, emo (oatmeal), egur (yogurt)...some words took awhile for us to figure out. You've recently named your pink puppy, "fufu".
You are still a little peanut, weighing less than 22 lbs and are now about 33.5" long. It's so hard to find clothes that fit you as you're too skinny for 18 month, but too long for 12 month. Fortunately, it's still warm out so we can put you in 12 month shorts and skirts where the length isn't as much of a problem. It will be interesting this fall once you start wearing pants again...you might be wearing some high waters for awhile.
You are feeding yourself with a spoon now for the most part; it's such a messy process, but you love the independence and do pretty well (especially with emo and egur [oatmeal and yogurt]). You still prefer to use your fingers over anything else and will often hold the spoon in your hand next to the food, but then scoop it up with your fingers and pop it in your mouth. You've learned about dipping food and love to eat chips and dip; we have to give you extra syrup for your pancakes now so that you can dip them in. You think every food is hot and will blow on it before taking a bite (even though it's not hot).
We have started having to negotiate with you and it has been working. For example, if you haven't eaten enough of the healthier foods on your plate and are wanting something different (usually something less healthy, like chips or french fries), we tell you to take a bite of one thing before we'll give you the other and you'll stop fussing and take a bite without hesitation (of course you are ready for the other thing as soon as you take the bite). I never imagined I'd be negotiating with a 18-month old!
You love to have your toenails painted and will often pull the polish out of my drawer and bring it to me saying "toes, toes". You'll sit perfectly still while I paint them and then will blow on them when I'm done.
You've started using the potty more and more; you're starting to use the potty as an excuse to not go night night...as soon as I start putting you in the crib you'll start saying "poop" or "potty" - of course I can't ignore it (just in case you really do need to go). The past few nights you actually have been going potty, so maybe it's not just an excuse to delay bedtime. :-) The first time you used the big girl potty you were 18 months and 5 days old and you told me you needed to go; after sitting for a few minutes and reading a few books, you ended up going #2 on the potty - we were so proud and so were you!
You love to be outside and love to swing, blow bubbles, play in your sand box, and help Daddy fish. You are in charge of holding the bait for Daddy and do a great job (until you get bored 10 minutes into it).
You've started going to Gymboree every Saturday and are loving it. The first class you were pretty scared and cried for a lot of the class; by the second class you were much more comfortable and participated in most of the class...and had a blast! Even though you're in daycare 3 days a week, I think this will be good for you to be around other kids and adults other than Daddy and me.
You love to play "nite nite" and will ask Daddy or me to put a blanket and pillow on the floor so you can lay on it and get wrapped up. You hate swimming pools (both big and small) - I hope you grow out of this fear soon.
You've been testing the waters lately and so we've had to put you in a few time outs this month, which makes you, me and Daddy all sad - your cries are so pitiful when you're in time out, but I think they're working to help you understand what you shouldn't do (we only do time outs when you do something really bad like hitting or biting). You've recently started to tell Daddy and me "no" when you don't want us to do something, so we've been having a lot of talks about that...hopefully they're working! :-)
You give the biggest best hugs (with a squeeze included) and the wettest sweetest kisses! We have recently discovered your super ticklish spots - on your sides in you rib cage - you have the sweetest cackle when we find the spot.
Every day is a new adventure with you and I'm so happy I get to be along for the ride!! I love you sweet girl, more deeply every day!
Love,
Mama
